First limited edition, octavo, number 43 of 50 deluxe copies on wove paper, lithographic frontispiece of Kokoschka's Menschenpaar printed in sanguine on thin China paper and signed by Kokoschka in pencil; bound in black sheep-backed decorated boards, with gilt lettered spine, top edge gilt.; rebacked with original spine panel preserved, light, minor spotting; rubbed at edges; ex libris Kurt and Else Arnhold, with bookplate; 10 1/8 x 7 in.

Kurt Arnhold (1887-1951) was a prominent Dresden banker and patron of the arts. In 1927 Arnhold commissioned Otto Dix to paint his portrait. The work is currently held at the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern in Germany. Papers of the Arnhold family are held at the Leo Baeck Institute and include a handwritten account of Kurt Arnhold's escape from Germany to Holland sometime around 1938.
